Way out in the middle of the North Atlantic, between Scotland, Norway, and Iceland, lies an archipelago of 18 ruggedly beautiful slivers of wool heaven--the Faroe Islands.
The Faroe Islands have a human population of under 50,000, but a sheep population of over 70,000. These are free-ranging, outdoorsy sheep, unfettered and untroubled by the news that elsewhere, sheep are kept in pens, take anti-biotics and wear jackets. These are sheep who have descended from a line brought to the islands centuries ago, who have survived by wandering where the food is and by growing an impressive coat that can stand up to the North Atlantic. The ultimate in sustainable agriculture. Not much has changed for these sheep for the last 7- or 800 years.
And, probably for just about as long as there have been Faroese Sheep, people have been making Faroese Wool yarn in just about the same way. No chemicals. No dyes. Just the perfect mix of coarser and finer fibers for good wear and warmth, allowed to retain their natural lanolin to stay water repellent. In beautiful, natural, off-the-sheep colors that appeal to the 'greenie' in all of us. For some time now, I've been selling the 2-ply worsted weight and delighting my customers as much as myself. Now, this lighter weight perfect for hats, gloves, and sweaters is available!
This new DK weight yarn still has the same firm, rustic hand. And still, while not soft and fluffy, this wool is not the least bit itchy, and it's still filled with the lovely, clean smell of the natural lanolin.
This DK weight 2-ply Faroese Wool knits on US 5-6 needles at 5.5-6 stitches per inch. Each 100g skein contains approximately 250 yards.
