Back in 1986, when I was but a pup, Eugene and Ann Bourgeois, a couple of Canadian academics turned farmers, started the Philosopher's Wool Company to increase the price wool farmers were paid for their fleeces.
Against the advice of those who 'knew better', Eugene insisted that his wool would not be cleaned by harsh chemicals but by a more natural process that would leave more of the wool's natural oils in the yarn. As a happy coincidence, this lack of chemical intervention resulted in a wool yarn that is less irritating to people who have found themselves allergic to other wools. And he came up with some of the prettiest wool yarns I've seen--substantial yarns in beautiful heathered colors that just scream 'warm and cozy.'
Years ago, I knit my first Philosopher's Wool Kit. The feel of springy natural wool, the smell of natural lanolin, the gorgeous heathery colors in intricate-looking patterns that are surprisingly easy to follow as you knit round and round with a two-handed fair isle method. (there's a video clip of the method on the Philosopher's Wool website) I was hooked instantly, and I've made several more in the intervening years.
This listing is for a complete kit for a cardigan or pullover in adult sizes up to a 52-inch chest. It includes 11 skeins of beautiful Philosopher's Wool, instructions, plus coordinating buttons. The kit is suitable for an intermediate knitter.
This colorway, Dark Jewel, includes jeweltones of turquoise, green, maroon, and blue with grey.
